Why life skills education is mandatory in today’s time

We at Little Umbrella Foundation think that learning involves more than simply textbooks and classroom settings. It is about developing self-assured people, fostering empathy, and preparing kids for life rather than merely tests. (Sen, 1999)

Children are growing up in a society that is rapidly changing and full of peer pressure, rivalry, social media impact, and continual comparison. Academic knowledge is still significant, but it is no longer sufficient. The way a youngster thinks, responds, communicates, and believes in themselves is what really counts. (Durlak, Weissberg, Dymnicki, Taylor, & Schellinger, 2011)

This is when learning life skills becomes crucial.

Developing Outside of Textbooks

The development of skills including communication, emotional awareness, critical thinking, decision-making, teamwork, and resilience is the main goal of life skills education. These abilities influence a child’s personality and destiny, even though they might not always show up on report cards.

We have personally witnessed the transforming power of these abilities at LUF. A child who was previously reluctant to speak slowly gets the courage to express their opinions. A student who was afraid of failing learns to give it another go. These little adjustments have long-term effects. (Durlak, Weissberg, Dymnicki, Taylor, & Schellinger, 2011)

By using alternative teaching techniques, we make sure that kids are learning not just academic subjects but also how to express themselves, control their emotions, and form wholesome connections. Because education ought to empower people in addition to providing information.

Children have difficulties outside of the classroom in many of the communities we serve. Opportunities and exposure are frequently restricted by social and economic obstacles. These circumstances make life skills education even more effective. It gives kids the self-assurance to face challenges and the bravery to have bigger dreams. (UNESCO, 2022)

Life skills foster empathy and aid in children’s understanding of others.
They strengthen their ability to bounce back from setbacks.
They develop their leadership and accountability skills and help them become considerate people. (Kabeer, 1999)

These are the traits that equip kids to face obstacles in higher education, the workplace, and society at large.

In Line with Our Goals

Empathy, education, and impact have always been at the heart of Little Umbrella Foundation’s goal. Education in life skills naturally reinforces this viewpoint. We establish a more comprehensive learning environment for each kid by integrating academic help with emotional and practical learning.

Literacy is only the beginning of true education. It starts there and spreads to character, compassion, and self-assurance. (Sen, 1999)

We are dedicated to incorporating life skills into every learning environment we design as we carry on our mission of empowering women and children via alternative education. Because learning life skills is essential in the modern world.

Together, we go a step closer to producing a generation that is socially conscious, emotionally resilient, and prepared to lead with empathy in addition to being educated.
